The worst fears of the Assembly elections in Haryana have come true with an attempt at booth capturing in the morning session of voting day at the Narnaund constituency.
In a replay of lumpen elements taking over booths and intimidating voters as in earlier years, this time Narnaund constituency has been under tension since early morning, with clashes breaking out between BJP and INLD supporters. BJP has accused INLD of attempting to capture booths and has further stated that similar attempts were being made in other parts of the Haryana, as well.
BJP and INLD supporters have also reportedly clashed outside a booth at Sirsa, where firing is reported to have taken place between their respective supporters. It is still unclear as to who instigated the clash but the Election Commissioner’s office will have its hands full keeping all parties in check.
Narnaund seat is very critical as BJP’s potential chief ministerial candidate, Capt. Abhimanyu is contesting from Narnaund and all parties would like to put maximum pressure on the voters to vote otherwise.
In most seats, the fight is expected to be between the BJP, INC and INLD and this time around the stakes are very high for all parties, especially BJP, as they would like to consolidate brand ‘Modi’, by coming to power in the state. And it is best positioned to capitalise the opportunity created between anti-incumbency of INC and the disarray of the INLD, with its leaders in jail.
