Yatra Naryastu Pujyante, Ramante Tatra Devata , a popular Sanskrit shloka given by the ancient philosophers of our country consider that divinity grow and blossom in a society where women are respected and given opportunities to rise and grow. But, in India, women are still suppressed in many cultures, societies and states. The issues pertaining to women exist in many states in the country. Haryana is one such state where issues related to women exist and require a change.
One of the major issues related to women in Haryana is the issue of female infanticide, which give birth to many related issues. Female Infanticide, in the state, can be ascertained from the existing sex ration, which is 879 females per 1000 males, as per the 2011 census. The sex ratio is low in the state as the girl child is either killed in the mother's womb or immediately after birth. The decreasing sex ratio has reached to a level that men in the state are not able to find brides for them. The families prefer the best suitable match for their daughters. The existence of lesser number of brides promote human trafficking, where women are bought, sold or even re-sold in different parts of the nation. There are some parts in Haryana where women are bought only to get a legal heir for the family. The decreasing number of available brides does not mean that the demand for dowry has been reduced in the state. The dowry cases have not decreased in the state, although, it has resulted in more crime against women.
The decreasing number of females in the state has promoted a custom in some parts of Haryana, known as Atta Batta , where a girl is married in exchange of a girl for her brother. Such practices are followed against the will of the women who are forced by their respective families to willingly take such steps. The troubles for women does not end here, it is also observed that the women in Haryana does not have any say in the family. The women can not give her opinion in matters such as family planning, matrimonial or sale and purchase of land, etc. The women in Haryana face several other issues such as higher education for women, dowry, rape etc.
Although, there are many serious issues pertaining to women in the state of Haryana, but like it is said that there is always a ray of hope to bring a change in the society. Naya Haryana - Ek Nayi Soch can bring a change in the life of the women in the state. A lot has already been done for the empowerment and upliftment of women in the state. Increase in education, special rights for women, equal status to men in the society can bring a change in the life of the women of Haryana. A platform is required where women can raise their voice, stand for their rights and bring forth the difficulties and troubles they are facing in their lives. The Nayi Soch has to be developed by the cumulative population of the state to bring a modified and a Naya Haryana in India.
