Haryana is one state that is not without its fair share of problems. In most of the cases the problems are seen to be limited to the rural side. However, there is one crisis that has now become a source of botheration of city people instead of their rural cousins. The problem is that of mulatiaccuon of garbage and trash on the roadside that have turned the roads into veritable garbage bins. In fact the situation in certain areas such as Gurgaon is so critical that people are worried that any day there could be a complete breakdown of civic life as we know in this part of the state. In fact, time and again they have expressed their dissatisfaction with the civic amenities on offer but it seems, from the way the problems persist, their complaints are falling on deaf ears.
The situation is, in fact, such that even the term breakdown should be accorded the status of an understatement. In fact cities like Gurgaon, in a way, represent everything that is problematic regarding the cities in the state. There has been a total lack of civic planning to deal with the burgeoning population, most of who come from other parts of the country or the rural areas in Haryana itself in search of bread, butter and more. This ever-increasing population has also stretched the resources in this city to their absolute limit.
However, the government cannot escape its share of blame in the present chaos. It is basically their lack of affirmative action that has contributed to this situation. In a report the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has stated Gurgaon will be overflowing in excreta by 2021 if the present situation is allowed to continue. It will also generate 533 million litres in sewage by that time. One can only imagine the plight of the lesser cities in Haryana by this projection. The worst thing is that the cities are not well-equipped when it comes to treating the sewage and once again it is the responsibility of the government to correct it. However, the government as they say in Hindi haat pe haat dhare baithe hain.Their ineptitude shows all around and the worse thing is that, it is the people who voted for them who are paying for this.
The situation needs to be improved. The first thing that the government needs to do is hire private agencies that deal in these services to clean up the cities for now. Then there need to be properly demarcated zones for dropping garbage and bins. If the need be then executives should be stationed day and night at these places so that proper monitoring can be done. Say for example, if someone does not drop the garbage at the designated place then these executives can pick up the same and then place it at the right spot, thus keeping the spots clean.
One more strategy can be tried. People can be employed in lieu of a good and regular salary so that they go and pick up the garbage from homes and drop them at the designated locations. This can be done anywhere and would surely be an effective plan in keeping the state free of dirt. Affirmative action is the need of the hour mere blame game will be of no help.
