Naya Haryana

All through its years of existence, alcohol has been described as a vice of human civilization. It has destroyed the health of many people and by extension, torn apart their families and near and dear ones. There are many clinics across the country nowadays that are dedicated to eradicating this habit of people. Now, clinics and rehabilitation centers are an essentially secondary reaction, going by the dictum that prevention is always better than cure. One of the better preventive measures in that case would be to have a definite timing when these outlets operate.

Now the question is, how would this benefit a state such as Haryana? Well, the answers are more than one. Not many would know but in the urban areas such as Gurgaon incidents of drunk driving are pretty common and most of them happen during the dead hours of the night. While it would be hard to blame the liquor shops or thekas straightaway for such incidents, one feels that if the alcohol shops are shut down at a certain time less people will have access to alcoholic beverages, and one hopes that such incidents will be reduced to a certain extent.

It has also been seen that inebriated youth are often misbehaving with women at the wee hours of the night  incidents of molestation and rape cannot be ruled out in a state such as Haryana where the rate of occurrence of such acts of crime is, unfortunately, high. One feels that better control could be imposed with a restriction on the timings of the liquor shops.

However, it is unwise to only lay the blame of these incidents on the wine shops. The state administration also needs to look at the role being played by discos and pubs that stay open till very late at night. The incidents of young ladies being drugged and consequently violated have increased nowadays, thanks to these establishments that are being inaugurated with the purpose of allowing people the opportunity to unwind but are being used for completely different and diabolical reasons.

In the rural areas of Haryana, the problems are of a different nature. Here, the fact that alcohol is one of the few means of enjoyment has meant that liquor shops are staying open longer than the time that would be optimal. This has led to health-related problems among people of all ages on a consistent basis, especially among the poorer sections of the society who do not have access to the finest products.

If they did not have uncontrolled access to the liquor shops they would not fall ill as often and it would reduce a couple of health related problems occurring in these parts of the state. Considering the situation of healthcare in these areas it may not be such a bad idea at all.

One also feels that the incidents of rape and domestic violence that happen owing to over consumption of alcohol could be limited if a restriction is put on the timing of the alcohol shops.
