Haryana's focus in the last few years has been to become one of the most dominant economies in India and it has opted to focus on developing the industrial sector for this purpose. However, the question that arises in this case is that can this be done without taking care of perhaps the most essential component the workers? The answer, as always, would be a resounding no.
The first step that needs to be taken in this regard is to foster a relation of mutual respect and harmony between the owners and workers. It is also important to ensure that the workers enjoy a sense of social justice because happy and satisfied workers can contribute to the growth and productivity of an industry more than nothing else. Not even the latest tools and implements can help a company or industry progress if the workers hearts are not into it. It is also important to take care of the safety and health of the workers.
Quite often, it has been seen that workers are made to execute their operations in really unhealthy environs while there are certain owners who are in favour of such policies in the garb of cost cutting and other excuses, it needs to be remembered that this cannot be a beneficial decision for his or her company in the long term. This is because the workers health and later on their psyche and productivity are damaged, in case they are made to work in areas which are not unfit for the said purpose.
It is also necessary that they are safe. The owners can accomplish this by financing their insurance from their salaries and providing them all the knowledge and tools that are needed in order to execute their functions without even as much as worrying about their safety.
The owners also need to look at welfare measures that will make their workers lives easier and help them concentrate better on their work. This can be done by setting up residential complexes in the vicinity of the workplace where the workers can enjoy the basic facilities in lieu of a nominal rent. In case the employer is able to do so, he or she can set up day care centres or schools where the employees wards will be taken care of. Similarly, a healthcare centre can also be established so that any health related issue can be taken care of at the primary level.
As far as the high money enterprises are concerned, they can think of facilities like gyms and rest rooms, where if any worker falls ill he or she can take rest before deciding the due course of action. For companies and industries that employ women it is essential to provide the best facilities possible and also improve them as and when possible. It is important to be aware of the special needs that ladies have at their workplaces and factor them in while determining what facilities will be provided to them. Their safety needs to be kept in mind as well for starters, it is better to not employ them in night shifts.
Child labour is one ill that plagues India and Haryana is no exception. The state needs to think of ways in which this menace can be done away with forever. However, punitive measures may not be enough in this case proper attention needs to be paid to the problems that forces one to send his or her children to work at such a young age and then they need to be solved so that no one has an excuse for perpetrating such a heinous crime.
