We are the world. We are the children. We are the ones who make a brighter day . The popular song by Michael Jackson in the 80s portrays how much the children of any nation are important for the brighter future of the world. But, there are certain issues which cause hindrance in the growth and development of the children. Such problems exist in Haryana as well.
The major issue pertaining to the life of children in Haryana is the issue of female infanticide. As per census 2011, the sex ratio (boys per 100 girls) in Haryana was reported at 119.7. The rights of a girl child are destroyed in Haryana even before she is born or immediately after her birth. In general, the children in India have a few rights which should be made available to them. Right to education, right to nutrition and right to healthcare are a few major rights which the children of our nation seek. We cannot ignore the fact that around 50% of children in India are reported to have not attended schools in their lives. Similar data is reported in Haryana too, where not every child is able to gain education in the state. Healthcare is another important issue in the state. As per the report for the Infant Mortality Rate Millennium Development Goals in India, the state is short of 24 points to achieve the MDG rate, which showcase that infant mortality rate is high in the state. This signifies that there might be lack of vaccinations or related knowledge among parents which cause and effect the change in this rate.
Crime and exploitation of children also need a serious consideration. Child labour is another horrendous crime which is followed in the state. As per reports, in the year 2005-2006, there were 9.6% of the total children who were involved in the act of child labour including paid labour, unpaid labour or household chores. During 2011, 280 incidents were reported in the state for the crime against children which include abduction, kidnapping, rape, murder, foeticide etc.
The situation of the children as discussed above shows that the condition of the children in Haryana is not satisfactory. The problems faced by the children show that they are not nurtured well the way they should be. It is required that all adequate and essential rights should be granted to them. Food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and right to education for them should be the foremost priority of the government and each individual of the state. Crime against children is required to be controlled and curbed at the earliest. Strict laws should be imposed against the culprit who gets involved in such crimes against them. Children are not only the future of our state/country, but will also nurture and preserve our dream of Naya Haryana in future. We together have to join hands and promise them that all their rights will be preserved and given to them in Naya Haryana.
